Caelan Doris Makes Irish Selection But Joe McCarthy Omitted

Rugby team selection update

Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has selected captain Doris in his Irish roster for the autumn internationals, however Joe McCarthy misses out.

Doris, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province player Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash are not included due to fitness concerns, and full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation after the summer tour.

Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new member in the 34-man squad, however Irish rugby authorities states new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "reserves".

Following facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented the coach, back to Ireland duty after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a largely experienced selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice fly-half position. The fly-half role is remains available, as the two players poised to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's URC game at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with Farrell deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer international victories over the Lelos and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran group of centre options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, though the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started a couple of Leinster's three league matches so far and featured in the second string's defeat by England in Bristol earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a international appearance.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is retained, and experienced Northern province lock Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions matches over the summer, is set to cover for the captain if the skipper does not regain full fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on Monday before flying to the US on Tuesday.
