Last-Minute Baker Mayfield Heroics Delivers Nail-Biting Victory Over Houston Texans

A couple of seasons ago, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers endured a tough loss to the Texans on a game-winning touchdown. This past Monday, Mayfield and his squad flipped the script with a clutch game-winning drive.

The veteran quarterback led an lengthy eighty-yard march that ended with the running back plunging into the goal line from two yards out with only mere seconds left. The Buccaneers rallied to defeat the Texans by a score of 20-19. Monday’s outcome stood in clear contrast to the squads’ last meeting in NRG Stadium back in the previous season, when the Texans’ QB connected with Tank Dell for a last-second TD to seal a 39-37 win.

“Anticipated a tough contest, but it’s nice to end up on the winning side now,” Baker said.

Tampa’s leader passed for over two hundred yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Bucs, who moved to two and zero on the early season. One critical 15-yard dash on fourth down sustained the game-winning offensive series alive.

“That represented a heck of performance of situational execution,” Tampa Bay skipper Todd Bowles noted. “Mayfield on the fourth-and-10, relying on his athleticism to pick up the new set of downs. It sparked the entire drive from there.”

In the Buccaneers’ opener, Baker threw a clutch score pass to the rookie with 59 seconds to go to seal a twenty-three to twenty win over their division rivals. The signal-caller officially stands alongside the franchise legend (from four decades ago) as the exclusive Tampa Bay QBs to begin a season with back-to-back game-winning series.

The home team (winless) seemed to have gained the advantage when they took a five-point edge on a twenty-five-yard TD sprint by Chubb with just over two minutes remaining. The Texans went for the extra points but the QB was sacked. Houston’s passer passed for two hundred seven yards and a touchdown but was unable to advance the offense consistently for the majority of the latter portion.

“There were plenty of opportunities to secure the matchup and we failed to make the necessary executions we needed to complete,” Houston coach the former linebacker stated.

Houston had registered the initial score of the contest when they took an early lead on the receiver’s 29-yard score grab. The score was set up when Stroud connected with Chubb for a twenty-seven-yard reception on a screen pass the play prior. The Buccaneers evened the score at seven apiece when the QB delivered a twenty-yard TD pass to the receiver on their first series.

Egbuka grabbed a 15-yard score catch with around 10 minutes remaining in the initial two quarters to place Tampa Bay up by four. Egbuka, a first-year player, became the 6th athlete since the NFL-AFL merger with three touchdown grabs in his first couple of games.

The home team was down by 4 and failed to scored in the third or fourth quarter when Riley Dixon’s boot was stopped by Johnson and the Texans recovered the ball on the Tampa Bay thirty-five with less than seven minutes remaining. The offense could not to drive the ball and kicked the kicker’s long kick that cut the deficit to fourteen to thirteen with just over time remaining on the clock.

Texans pass rusher Hunter caused a fumble and recorded two sacks to give him to one hundred and one point five in his 10-year professional journey.

Tampa are now two and zero for the fifth season in straight, the longest current run in the league.
